Family Photos That Feel Like You

Family photographs do not always need a big milestone behind them. Sometimes the season you are in right now is reason enough to document it.

That is one of my favorite things about sessions like this. Rather than focusing on perfectly posed photographs from beginning to end, we can make room for what your life actually looks like. Holding hands while you walk. Laughing when the dogs have plans of their own. Sitting together on a blanket and trying to get everyone looking in the same direction for just a second.

Those little in between moments often become some of the photographs that feel the most meaningful because they are completely yours.

Yes, Bring Your Dogs to Your Family Session

If your dogs are part of your family, they belong in your family photos.

Bringing pets along adds a little unpredictability to a session, but it also adds so much personality. Shannon and Tom’s pups joined us for portraits on the sand, walks along the beach, and even a few very enthusiastic kisses.

And there is no need to worry about your dog behaving perfectly for the camera. They can explore, take breaks, stay on leash, and simply be themselves. The goal is not perfection. It is creating photographs that remind you exactly what this chapter of life felt like.

A Relaxed Evening by the Coast

The coast gave us the most beautiful backdrop for this session. Rocky stretches of shoreline opened into soft sand and ocean views, while the light slowly shifted from warm and golden to the prettiest shades of blush pink.

We started with the whole family together, giving the dogs plenty of room to be part of the fun. As the evening slowed down, we also created space for photographs of just Shannon and Tom.

Those quieter portraits became some of my favorites from the session. Walking near the water, leaning into each other, holding hands, and sharing a kiss as the last of the sunset reflected across the wet sand. Nothing complicated, just the two of them together.

Making Space for the Moments In Between

One of the reasons I love photographing families outdoors is that there is room to move.

You do not have to stand in one place wondering what to do with your hands. We can walk along the water, sit together, love on your pups, explore the shoreline, and stop when the light or a moment feels right.

That movement creates photographs that feel relaxed while still leaving room for the classic portraits you will want to frame. It is a balance of the beautifully composed and the completely unscripted.

And when the evening gives us a pastel sky like this one, staying until the very end is always worth it.

Local Favorites: Make a Day of It With Your Pup

If your coastal family photos bring you to the Carmel area, you do not have to leave your four legged family members behind when the session is over. Carmel by the Sea is wonderfully dog friendly, with plenty of places to walk, eat, and stay with your pup.

Start with a walk at Carmel Beach, where dogs are allowed to explore off leash as long as they are under voice control. It is such a beautiful place to let them run along the sand, play near the water, and enjoy a little extra beach time together.

Afterward, wander into the village for something to eat. Terry’s Restaurant + Lounge at Cypress Inn is a fun option for dog lovers, and Carmel has plenty of other restaurants with dog friendly patios throughout town.

If you are turning your family photo session into a little coastal getaway, Cypress Inn is also known for welcoming four legged guests, making it easy to plan a stay where your pup gets to come along too.

A beach walk, dinner in the village, and family photographs somewhere along the way sounds like a pretty perfect Carmel kind of day.
