Family sessions, especially with a larger group, are about so much more than getting everyone together for one photograph.

Of course, we always want that beautiful portrait with everyone looking at the camera. It is the photograph that gets framed, gifted to grandparents, printed for the walls, and perhaps becomes the year’s holiday card.

But some of our favorite images happen in between.

They are the laughter after someone makes a joke, grandparents surrounded by the people they love, siblings falling naturally back into their familiar rhythm, and kids getting a little sandy while we let them simply be kids.

Those moments are what give a gallery its heart.

For the Ostwald family, we photographed several different combinations throughout their session, from the entire family together to smaller groups and individual family units. Creating space for those different combinations means everyone walks away with photographs that tell both the larger family story and their own smaller piece of it.
