There is something about a proposal by the ocean that already feels a little magical. As a Carmel proposal photographer, I love documenting moments that feel intimate, relaxed, and true to the couple. Add in a quiet morning, coffee, the Carmel coastline, and a surprise that wasn’t supposed to happen until later in the day, and you have Alex and Connor’s story.

These two have been together for just shy of four years, but their story started the very modern way: Hinge.

Connor spent weeks talking to Alex before finally working up the courage to see her in person. And when he did? He decided to cook dinner.

Romantic, right?

Well… sort of.

Connor remembers serving salmon and vegetables on a paper plate and admits that, in hindsight, his early twenties version of a romantic dinner may not have been quite as impressive as he’d imagined.

But clearly, it worked.

When Someone Starts to Feel Like Home

Ask Connor what he loves most about Alex, and one of the first things he mentions is her sense of humor. She’s one of the most naturally funny people he knows, and laughter has become a constant in their relationship.

They’re also both quietly competitive, which means their time together can involve anything from card and board games to golf, pickleball, volleyball, or climbing.

But the moment Connor knew Alex was the one wasn’t some grand romantic occasion.

It was an ordinary day.

They had just finished putting groceries away when Connor started thinking about the plans they had coming up. Suddenly, he felt an overwhelming sense of comfort and home, the kind he’d only ever associated with his family.

Except this time, he felt it with Alex.

And sometimes that’s exactly how you know.

When it came time to propose, Connor knew he wanted the moment to feel private and scenic, preferably somewhere along the coast. Working with a Carmel proposal photographer gave him the opportunity to keep the moment intimate while making sure every part of the surprise was beautifully documented.

Carmel and Big Sur immediately came to mind.

Alex and Connor had traveled to Monterey and Big Sur the year before and had an incredible time. After moving to San Francisco, Connor realized the area was close enough for a getaway while still feeling significant enough for a moment this big.

There was only one problem: Alex knew a proposal was coming.

She didn’t know when or where. She only knew that Connor planned to propose sometime before the end of the year.

So Connor used that to his advantage.

He kept the trip itself a surprise until the day they left and planned an itinerary for their time away. Then, rather than waiting for the romantic evening Alex might expect, he suggested something wonderfully ordinary:

A morning walk with coffee.

A Surprise Proposal on the Carmel Coast

That quiet morning led them out toward the Carmel coastline.

No crowd. No elaborate setup. Just the two of them, the ocean, and a place that already held memories from their relationship.

And then Connor asked Alex to marry him.

The ring was a beautiful marquise cut diamond set on a simple gold solitaire band, and against the muted colors of the coast, it couldn’t have felt more fitting.

Afterward, there was nowhere they needed to rush off to.

They could just be together.

Shoes came off. They walked through the sand, curled up together among the dunes, laughed, kissed, and let the reality of being engaged sink in.

Those are some of my favorite moments to photograph after a proposal.

Once the anticipation is gone and the secret has finally been revealed, everything changes. The nerves disappear. Shoulders relax. And suddenly I’m photographing two people who get to look at each other and think:

We’re getting married.

Alex & Connor, Just as They Are

There is an ease between these two that comes through in every photograph.

The way Alex wraps herself around Connor. The little kisses. Bare feet in the sand. The laughter. Her hand resting on his chest with that beautiful new ring catching the light.

Nothing needed to be overly complicated because their connection did all the work.

And that’s what I love most about proposals like this one.

The beautiful location matters. The planning matters. The ring matters.

But underneath all of it is something much simpler: finding the person who makes an ordinary moment like putting groceries away, playing a game together, or making margaritas at home feel like the place you belong.

Connor found that in Alex.

And on a quiet morning along the Carmel coast, he asked her to make it forever.
