Small Business Spotlight: Rachel Zee Photography

Rachel Zee and I met at a Rising Tide Society meeting through a mutual photographer. I just moved from the East Coast when a friend introduced us. My first impression of her is that she was stunning inside and out. We both realized quickly how much we have in common: we have similar photography styles, backgrounds in fashion photography, and we also both have significant others named Jonathan! I am so excited to feature her on the blog today. She’s a sweet friend and an incredible girl boss. Learn more about Rachel from Rachel Zee Photography

Tell me about you! What’s your story of how you started and where you are now?

I started doing photography while I was still in college studying art. My first subjects were my friends, who I captured with a Sony Cybershot Point and Shoot camera. Realizing that I had a new passion, I saved up to buy my first DSLR soon after.

After I graduated from college, I worked for a photographer as a studio assistant. Today, over 11 years later, I have photographed a variety of things, but I’ve honed in on exactly what I love to photograph: family portraits and elopements. I truly love my job!

Can you share what makes Rachel Zee Photography unique from other photographers?

I have super relaxed photo shoots! I believe that a person is never more beautiful than when they are with their loved ones and being themselves. Because of this, I am very intentional about keeping the atmosphere a fun place where my subjects can have quality family or couple time.

What are your favorite events to photograph and why?

Young family sessions! I love capturing the precious years of wild kids and exhausted parents, but the home is full of love. Families grow and change so quickly that I believe these are super important memories to have.

What is something you want to see more of in 2020?

More extended family sessions. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins… these are important people to have photos with too! I’d love to see more families including them in their sessions. Oftentimes its a special occasion when full families are able to get together and I think it’s important to take that opportunity to get a big family photo of everyone.

What is a bridal tip you’d offer to brides as a photographer?

Don’t be afraid to add your own personality to your wedding or to take out any “traditions” that don’t suit you and your fiancé. I love seeing personal touches. I recently photographed an elopement where the bride’s bouquet was made from dried flowers she picked on the day they got engaged. How cool is that?!

Lastly, what is a fun fact about you?

I’m in my 5th year of coaching middle school cheerleading. I cheered throughout middle school, high school, and in college and it really helped form the person I am today. Now I get to give back to a new generation and encourage them to work hard, follow their dreams, and believe in themselves.

Thank you, Rachel! You are definitely one of my favorites and I can’t wait to do another Mastermind session with you again.
