As a California coastal photographer, we are always drawn to engagement sessions that feel grounded in connection rather than performance. Palmer and Megan’s coastal engagement session was relaxed, intentional, and rooted in the season they are in right now.
Set along the Northern California coast, their session unfolded slowly with space to move, talk, laugh, and simply be together. From soft sand beneath their feet to the quiet rhythm of the ocean nearby, everything about the setting supported what mattered most, their connection. Being a local and California coastal photographer, my approach is always the same. I am centered on documenting real connection and allowing space for moments to unfold naturally.

A Love Story Built on Real Moments
Palmer and Megan met on Hinge during the pandemic, a time when meaningful connection felt both fragile and essential. After weeks of texting and FaceTiming, they met in person on June 29, 2020, for a first date at Prospect Park in Brooklyn.

They planned a simple pizza and wine picnic, but the day quickly took an unexpected turn when a torrential hailstorm rolled through the park. Laughing, they took cover under a tree and used the pizza box as a shield. When the storm passed, they headed back to Megan’s apartment to dry off, reheat the pizza, and keep talking. That unplanned evening became the foundation of a relationship built on humor, adaptability, and genuine care.
The Coast as Their Backdrop
Choosing the coast for their engagement session felt natural for Palmer and Megan. The landscape reflects so much of what they value, ease, openness, and the ability to slow down and be present together.
As California coastal photographers, we love how the shoreline creates space for movement and connection. There is no pressure to perform or pose. Instead, couples can walk, talk, and interact naturally, letting moments unfold in a way that feels true to them.

For Palmer and Megan, the coast provided a setting that felt calm, expansive, and deeply aligned with who they are as a couple.
An Engagement Session Focused on Presence
From the start, Palmer and Megan approached their engagement session with intention. Rather than worrying about perfect poses, they focused on spending time together and staying present.

We guided them gently, offering prompts that encouraged interaction rather than direction. Some of our favorite images came from the in between moments, shared glances, quiet laughter, and the way they instinctively reached for each other while walking along the shoreline.

This is at the heart of how we approach engagement photography as California coastal photographers. Our goal is always to create an experience that feels natural and meaningful, allowing couples to show up as themselves.
The Proposal That Led Them Here
Palmer proposed to Megan on June 29, 2023, exactly three years after their first date. While on their way to Sonoma for a weekend away, they stopped along the coast where fog rolled in and the Pacific was just barely visible.

In that quiet moment, Palmer shared a heartfelt speech before getting down on one knee. Megan said yes, and the rest of the weekend was spent celebrating with good wine and uninterrupted time together.
Thoughtful Details That Reflect Their Story
One of our favorite parts of Palmer and Megan’s engagement session was photographing the ring they designed together. After visiting several jewelers, they chose to create a custom piece that felt personal and meaningful.

The oval diamond is set in an east west orientation, symbolizing their lives on both the East and West Coasts. The cathedral rail features blue diamonds and Montana sapphires. The blue diamonds reflect their love for the ocean and a relationship that spans coast to coast. The Montana sapphires nod to the Treasure State, a detail made even more special by Palmer calling Megan his treasure.
Details like these add depth to an engagement session and help tell a fuller story beyond the images.
California Coastal Photographer Approach
Megan loves Palmer for his kindness, curiosity, and sense of humor. He cares deeply about the people and passions in his life and approaches everything with patience and thoughtfulness.

Palmer loves Megan for her unwavering care and the way she consistently shows up for the people she loves. She leads with heart, is passionate about her work, and deeply invested in the lives of those around her. Photographing their connection felt effortless because of the way they support and care for one another.
Looking Ahead to Their Wedding Day
Photographing Palmer and Megan’s engagement session made us even more excited to document their wedding day. The way they show up for one another, with intention, care, and a deep sense of presence, is exactly what we love capturing throughout a full wedding experience.

Knowing how thoughtfully they approach every part of their relationship, we cannot wait to continue telling their story as they move into the next season. From quiet moments together to celebrations with the people they love most, we are looking forward to documenting a day that feels just as grounded and meaningful as their engagement session.
We are so honored to be part of this chapter and what comes next.

With a California Coastal Photographer
The California coast offers a unique environment for engagement photography. It is open, grounding, and naturally beautiful without feeling overwhelming. It invites couples to slow down and enjoy the experience rather than rush through it.

As a California coastal photographer, I believe engagement sessions should feel like an extension of who you are as a couple. They are a chance to document this season of life in a way that feels honest, relaxed, and true.
Palmer and Megan’s session embodied exactly that.
A Local’s Recommendations
Carmel is one of our favorite places for engagement sessions along the California coast. With its walkable beaches, soft light, and relaxed pace, it offers space to slow down and truly enjoy the experience together. It is especially fitting for couples who want their session to feel less like a photoshoot and more like a meaningful day spent exploring.

For couples who love good wine and thoughtful experiences, we always suggest turning an engagement session in Carmel into a full day. Carmel Valley is just a short drive away and home to some incredible tasting rooms, including Folktale Winery and Hahn Winery, all known for their welcoming atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. Spending time together before or after your session adds another layer of meaning to the day.

Carmel also offers no shortage of cozy places to linger. Whether it is a post session dinner at La Bicyclette, a quiet drink at Cultura Comida y Bebida, or coffee and pastries from Rise and Roam Bakery, these moments often become just as memorable as the photos themselves.
An engagement session here is not just about the images. It is about creating space to celebrate this season together in a place that invites you to slow down and be present.
