There is something extra special about a proposal by the ocean. The sound of the waves, the open coastline, and for Bernardo and Camilla, one very important question waiting to be asked.

Bernardo chose the Carmel coast for his surprise proposal to Camilla! They were surrounded by sandy beaches, rocky shoreline, and the kind of soft California light we love photographing.

And Camilla’s reaction said it all!

A Surprise Proposal in Carmel, California

Bernardo found a quiet stretch of beach along the Carmel coast and waited for just the right moment.

Then he got down on one knee.

Camilla immediately brought her hands to her face as she realized what was happening. Bernardo held out the ring and a normal walk along the coast suddenly became a moment they will remember forever.

She said yes!

One of my favorite things about photographing proposals is getting to preserve these few seconds exactly as they happen. There is no posing and no recreating that first reaction. I simply get to document the surprise, the emotion, and everything that comes right after.

She Said Yes

After the initial surprise, Bernardo slipped the ring onto Camilla’s finger and the two finally had a chance to take it all in.

And can we talk about that ring?

A classic solitaire looked beautiful against the natural colors and textures of the Carmel coastline. Of course, we made sure to photograph all those little details along with the big moment.

From the look on Camilla’s face to the newly placed ring on her hand, these are the photographs that bring you right back to how it felt.

Engagement Photos Along the Carmel Coast

Once the proposal was official, the celebration continued with engagement photos along the beach.

Camilla changed out of her coat, Bernardo rolled up his pants, and both of them kicked off their shoes to enjoy the sand and ocean together.

This part of a proposal session is always so much fun because the secret is finally out. The nerves are gone, the answer is yes, and the couple gets to simply enjoy being engaged.

Bernardo and Camilla walked barefoot along the beach, explored the rocks, kissed by the water, and soaked up those first moments as fiancés.

As the sun moved lower over the Pacific, the sky softened into pastel tones and gave us the perfect Carmel backdrop to finish their session.

Why I Love Carmel Proposals

Carmel is one of our favorite places to photograph proposals because there is so much natural beauty packed into this little stretch of the California coast.

You have sandy beaches, dramatic rocks, coastal trees, ocean views, and beautiful light all within a relatively small area. It means a proposal can feel intimate while still having an incredible landscape surrounding it.

It also gives us plenty of variety for engagement portraits afterward, which is exactly what we got to do with Bernardo and Camilla.

Their gallery went from the surprise itself to barefoot portraits on the sand and romantic photographs among the rocks as the light faded over the ocean.

A Local’s Favorite: Where to Celebrate After Your Carmel Proposal

If you are coming to Carmel for your proposal, make a whole date out of it. Once the secret is out and the photos are done, there is no reason to rush off.

Take a slow walk along Carmel Beach and catch the last bit of sunset together, then head into Carmel-by-the-Sea to celebrate. For a cozy dinner, La Bicyclette is a favorite for its intimate atmosphere right in the heart of town. Or head over to Mission Ranch for dinner or a celebratory drink with one of those quintessential Carmel views.

Staying for the weekend? Make time for a drive along 17-Mile Drive or spend a few hours exploring Point Lobos State Natural Reserve for even more of the coastline that makes this part of California so special.

Our local tip is to leave a little room in your plans. The proposal might be the reason you came to Carmel, but slowing down and enjoying everything afterward is part of what makes the experience so memorable.
