A Love Story Along the Carmel Coast
As a Carmel Proposal Photographer, I’m lucky to capture moments that remind me why I love this work. James and Madison’s Pebble Beach proposal was one of those unforgettable days. The golden light poured over the Pacific, the ocean breeze carried that mix of excitement and calm, and there was something in the air that said this was going to be special.

James and Madison have been together for two and a half years. James works in Mortgage and Real Estate, and Madison is an HR Business Partner. From the moment they met, their connection was easy and genuine. James told me he knew she was “the one” not even three months in, though she didn’t believe him at first. I smiled hearing that because that playful honesty set the tone for everything that followed.

Capturing Connection as a Carmel Proposal Photographer
When you’re around them, you can feel the balance they bring to each other. Maddie has what James calls “the kindest of hearts and one of the strongest drives.” Their love language is Acts of Service, and it shows in the way they look out for one another. They flip furniture together for fun, share wine nights where she pours white and he pours red, and when the music comes on, it’s always country that gets them dancing.

How a Carmel Proposal Photographer Helped Bring the Plan to Life
James had been planning this proposal for a long time. He laughed as he told me it had been two and a half years in the making. They always joked about marriage, and Madison would say she had “a few steps before then.” Little did she know, James had already been dreaming of the moment he’d ask her to be his wife.

Madison spent three months on a work assignment in Madera, and during that time, she fell in love with the town of Carmel. The charm, the coast, the peacefulness of it all stayed with her. James wanted to propose somewhere that carried meaning for her, so Pebble Beach was an easy choice. It was close to her heart and absolutely stunning.
A Carmel Proposal Photographer’s Favorite Kind of Afternoon
James planned an afternoon proposal with a celebratory dinner afterward. The light was soft and warm, perfect for capturing that golden glow that makes Pebble Beach so magical. They were staying at the beautiful Cypress Inn in Carmel, which added the perfect touch of classic coastal charm to their weekend.

When the moment came, it was everything you hope a proposal will be. Madison was completely surprised. She had been convinced this wouldn’t happen until sometime in 2025. The second James dropped to one knee, her expression shifted from curiosity to pure, unfiltered joy. She was excited and completely caught off guard.

And James? He admitted later that he was the one who cried. It’s those kinds of moments that make my job feel like a front-row seat to the most genuine human emotion. You could see the years of love and laughter flash between them in just a few seconds.

The Details That Tell Their Story
The engagement ring was a fully gold, cushion-cut design from a private family jeweler based out of New Jersey. Simple, timeless, and elegant, just like their relationship.

Madison wore a soft white and blue dress that moved beautifully in the ocean breeze. James kept it classic in a white shirt and dark pants. The color palette complemented the rocky coast and the gentle tones of the afternoon sky.

I love capturing both vibrant color and black-and-white moments, and this session had the perfect mix of both. The textures of the rocks, the shimmer of the water, and the emotion in their eyes came together in a way that felt effortless. Every frame told a small part of their love story.

A Moment to Remember on the Carmel Coast
After the proposal, James and Madison shared a few quiet minutes just soaking everything in before heading off to their special dinner in Carmel. There was laughter, a few more happy tears, and the kind of smiles that say this is it.

As we wrapped up the session, I couldn’t help but feel honored to have been there for such an important chapter in their lives. Being trusted to document something so intimate and real is a privilege that never gets old.
From My Lens as a Local and Carmel Proposal Photographer
What I loved most about photographing this proposal was how natural everything felt. There was no rush, no posing, just two people completely wrapped up in their own moment. The soft afternoon light filtered through the coastal mist, giving every shot a dreamy warmth that matched their energy perfectly.

James and Madison reminded me that love doesn’t need grand gestures to be extraordinary. Sometimes, it’s in the simple things, like a shared glass of wine, a laugh over a furniture project, or an afternoon that turns into forever.

James and Madison’s Pebble Beach proposal was filled with laughter, surprise, and the kind of emotion that lingers long after the day ends. I’m so grateful to have captured it for them and can’t wait to see where their journey takes them next.
