A Pebble Beach Proposal | Anna & Aaron

Romantic Pebble Beach proposal overlooking the 18th hole and California coast

Some love stories have more than one moment worth celebrating. For Anna and Aaron, their romantic Pebble Beach proposal was not about the beginning of their story. Instead, it was about honoring everything they had already built together and stepping into the next chapter in a way that felt completely their own.

With the Pacific Ocean in the distance, the green of Pebble Beach stretching toward the coastline, and Anna’s family nearby to celebrate, Aaron got down on one knee overlooking the iconic 18th hole. Even though Anna had a feeling a proposal might be coming, the emotion of the moment was very real.

And honestly, those are some of our favorite proposals to photograph. The ones where the surprise is only one small piece of a much bigger story.

A Love Story Years in the Making

Anna and Aaron first crossed paths during their freshman year of college. Anna was visiting a friend at MIT who happened to be one of Aaron’s classmates. Their story did not begin right away, though. A few years later, during their senior year, they met again in New York and started dating.

They have been together since 2018, and Aaron shared that there was not necessarily one dramatic moment when he realized Anna was the one. Instead, he knew pretty early that they had something special because being together simply felt like being a family.

That sentiment says so much about their relationship.

They love exploring new cities and places together, sending each other memes, listening to everything from Mac Miller to Chopin, and enjoying the everyday moments that make a relationship feel like home. Aaron also loves surprising Anna with little things that remind him of her, which made planning this larger surprise feel especially fitting.

A Romantic Pebble Beach Proposal With a Twist

There is another piece of Anna and Aaron’s story that makes this proposal especially meaningful.

They were already married.

Anna and Aaron officially got married on October 8, 2021, during COVID. However, they had always planned on celebrating their marriage again in a bigger and more intentional way. As Aaron put it, they still wanted to have the “real deal.”

When he decided this was finally the year, December felt like the perfect opportunity. Anna’s family would be nearby, which meant the people closest to them could be part of the celebration too.

So while this may look like the beginning of a love story in photographs, it was actually a celebration of a relationship that had already grown through years of life together.

We love that.

There is no single timeline that a love story has to follow. Sometimes the proposal comes first. Sometimes life happens a little differently. What matters is creating a moment that feels meaningful to the two of you.

The 18th Hole at Pebble Beach

When Aaron began thinking about where he wanted to propose, Pebble Beach felt right.

Carmel had always held a special place in his memories because he visited the area as a child and remembered just how beautiful it was. For the proposal itself, he chose the lawn between The Lodge at Pebble Beach and the 18th green.

It is difficult to imagine a more quintessential Pebble Beach setting.

The manicured green rolls toward the water while the coastline and mountains create layers in the distance. From a photography perspective, there is so much depth and natural beauty without needing to add anything to the setting.

Aaron proposed at 4 p.m., giving us beautiful afternoon light as the sun began moving lower toward the horizon.

As he dropped to one knee, Anna immediately brought her hands to her face. Then came the smiles, the hugs, and the kind of laughter that makes it almost impossible not to smile while looking through the photographs afterward.

The Ring

Of course, we have to talk about the ring.

Aaron chose a large pear shaped diamond from Ritani. He specifically selected the shape because Anna already had a flared wedding band and he thought the pear shaped stone would pair beautifully with it.

It was such a thoughtful choice and another example of how much intention Aaron put into making this proposal feel like Anna.

After the initial excitement settled, we made sure to photograph the ring along with all of those smaller details that help tell the complete story of a proposal.

Once the secret was officially out, we could relax into the rest of their session.

This is one of our favorite parts of photographing proposals. The anticipation disappears and suddenly there is nothing left to do except celebrate.

Anna and Aaron walked around the property together, laughed, cuddled, and took in what had just happened. Their outfits also photographed beautifully against the Pebble Beach landscape. Anna’s deep red dress brought warmth into the greens and blues surrounding them, while Aaron’s neutral jacket kept everything feeling relaxed and timeless.

And we have to give a moment to their matching white sneakers.

Those little details are exactly why we love photographing couples as they actually are. Their portraits feel polished and romantic, but they still feel like Anna and Aaron.

As the sun continued to drop, we made our way toward the water for another completely different look.

From Pebble Beach to the Water

One of the best parts about planning a romantic Pebble Beach proposal is how much variety this area can offer within one experience.

We started surrounded by manicured greens and sweeping ocean views. Later, Anna and Aaron walked along the pier as golden light reflected off the water behind them.

They held hands, kissed, laughed, and eventually made their way down toward the shoreline.

And then things got a little less polished in the best possible way.

Shoes came off. Feet got wet. Waves rolled in. There was plenty of laughing.

These are often the photographs that end up becoming some of our favorites because they are not about creating a perfect pose. They are about letting the couple enjoy themselves and photographing what unfolds.

Celebrating at The Lodge at Pebble Beach

Anna and Aaron stayed at The Lodge at Pebble Beach for their trip, making the proposal part of a larger getaway rather than just one afternoon.

Aaron also arranged a special dinner through Pebble Beach for after the proposal. Then, because these two clearly know how to make the most of a trip, they planned several days of golf.

It could not have been a more fitting celebration for a proposal overlooking one of the most recognizable golf holes in the world.

Their plans also reflect something we always recommend to couples traveling to the Monterey Peninsula for a proposal. Give yourself time to actually enjoy being here.

Instead of rushing in and out for the proposal itself, turn the experience into a weekend or a few days together. Explore Carmel, play a round of golf, enjoy a long dinner, walk along the coast, and give yourselves time to soak everything in.

Planning Your Own Romantic Pebble Beach Proposal

Pebble Beach offers an incredible mix of ocean views, golf course scenery, cypress trees, rocky coastline, and classic California architecture. That variety also means the exact proposal location matters.

Lighting, time of day, privacy, backgrounds, and where you plan to go afterward can all change how the experience feels and photographs.

This is where having a photographer who knows the Carmel and Pebble Beach area becomes especially valuable.

We can help you think through the location, timing, lighting, and logistics so that when the moment arrives, your only job is to focus on your partner.

If you are making a trip out of your proposal, The Lodge at Pebble Beach is a beautiful option for staying close to the experience. You can also spend time exploring nearby Carmel by the Sea, drive the scenic 17 Mile Drive, or plan a celebratory meal overlooking the coast.

The proposal may only last a few minutes, but the memories surrounding it can become an entire experience.

A Romantic Pebble Beach Proposal Worth Celebrating

Anna and Aaron’s story is such a beautiful reminder that love does not have to follow a specific order.

They met in college, found each other again in New York, built a life together, married during an incredibly unusual chapter of the world, and eventually found themselves standing beside the 18th hole at Pebble Beach creating another milestone together.

Their romantic Pebble Beach proposal was not about starting over. It was about celebrating how far they had already come.

From Aaron getting down on one knee to Anna’s reaction, their family nearby, golden hour along the water, and eventually barefoot laughter at the shoreline, the entire afternoon felt joyful, relaxed, and completely personal to them.
