A Dreamy Big Sur Surprise | Tucker & Caitlin

Coastal engagement session with candid laughter and ocean breeze

If you are searching for a 17 Mile Drive photographer who can capture the surprise, the tears, and the magic of a coastal proposal, look no further. Tucker and Caitlin’s session is the perfect inspiration! Their sunset engagement moment along the California coastline was heartfelt, joyful, and effortlessly timeless, the kind of story that feels like it belongs in a movie.

Tucker and Caitlin are the kind of couple who makes you believe in love that is both steady and wildly fun. The kind where one person knows exactly how to make the other laugh, and the other knows exactly how to make life feel special in the quietest ways. Their story begins in college, rooted in friendship and shared time, and it unfolds into something beautifully intentional.

And then, of course, there is the proposal. A sunset plan, a coastline view and a surprise that Caitlin did not see coming. There is enough emotion to make even the most composed among us tear up just a little.

17 Mile Drive Proposal Photos with a Sunset Coastline Location

Tucker originally pictured proposing on the beach. Something sandy, simple, and sweet. But as we talked through the session and what would photograph best, the vision shifted toward something even more cinematic.

A slightly elevated coastline location with dramatic cliffs, ocean views, and that dreamy coastal haze that makes everything feel soft and romantic.

The elevated view created the perfect stage for a proposal because it made the moment feel private, expansive, and unforgettable. The kind of place where you can hear the ocean below and feel like you are standing on the edge of the world, even while the whole thing still feels intimate.

Tucker and Caitlin planned to spend the day exploring the beauty of the 17 Mile Drive area. Then they would either conclude their adventures with the proposal, or go home, change, and make the proposal a meaningful stop before dinner. The goal was perfect light and enough time afterward for portraits, because the best part of the proposal is not just the yes. It is everything that happens right after.

Caitlin did not know it was happening that day.

They had talked about rings, and she knew the proposal would happen at some point. But she expected it would be the following week when they travel to Italy. So Tucker pulled off the ultimate romantic misdirection, and it worked beautifully.

The moment he dropped to one knee, Caitlin immediately covered her face, tears already forming, and her whole body language said everything. She was not shocked in the sense of disbelief, but she was overwhelmed in the best way. This was her person, choosing her, in a way that felt both completely expected and still unbelievably emotional.

As a 17 Mile Drive photographer, we love creating space for couples to feel fully present while we capture every honest reaction in real time. That is what makes proposal photos timeless. Not the pose. Not the perfection. The real reactions. The laughter, the tears, and the little moments where you can see the love in someone’s face before they even say a word.

Tucker predicted there would be tears, and he was correct. Caitlin also needed a second to gather herself before continuing with portraits, which was also correct. The truth is that happy crying is gorgeous, but it does require a quick reset, especially if you want your mascara to stay friendly for the rest of the session.

Engagement Ring Style with a Simple Emerald Cut Diamond and Gold Band

Caitlin’s ring style is the definition of elegant and timeless.

She wanted something really simple. A gold band with an emerald cut diamond. No additional jewels. No extra details. Just clean, classic beauty.

It is a ring that will never go out of style, and it fits Caitlin perfectly. Confident. Refined. Uncomplicated in the best way. A piece that feels like it belongs in every chapter of her story.

And as a bonus for photographers everywhere, an emerald cut catches light in the most dreamy way. The sparkle is soft and luxurious, which matches the entire tone of this session.

College Football, Pasta Night, and a Kitchen Slow Dance

Tucker and Caitlin met in college as students, both working for the football team. Tucker was a student manager, and Caitlin was an athletic trainer. They worked around the same schedules, the same games, the same busy energy that tends to create friendships without anyone realizing it.

Their first date happened when they were in Los Angeles for the Rose Bowl, which is honestly iconic. If you are going to start a relationship, starting it on a trip like that is a pretty strong move.

When asked what he loves most about Caitlin, Tucker said it is hard to choose, but he loves how much she goes out of her way to make him feel special. The little things and the big. He hopes he can reciprocate even half of it.

Then he added something that made us smile because it is so honest. He loves when she teases him about his bad habits. Especially the ones only she would know. There is something about being loved so deeply that someone can make fun of you in a way that feels like home.

The Kitchen Pasta Night That Made Him Certain

One of the sweetest parts of their story is their anniversary tradition. They do not do fancy dinners. Not because they do not value celebrating, but because they were broke college kids when they started dating, and the tradition became staying in and making something special together.

One year, during a difficult long distance season, they made pasta from scratch at Caitlin’s house. It was chaotic and memorable, including Caitlin spilling all the cooked pasta on the ground, which is a detail that makes the story perfect. Not because it went smoothly, but because it did not, and it still became one of their favorite memories.

That night ended with them slow dancing in her kitchen to Strawberries by Caamp, and Tucker said during that slightly tipsy dance he knew for sure.

Not in a dramatic way. In a quiet, deeply certain way. The kind of certainty that makes you stop thinking about timing and start thinking about forever.

The After Joy of a 17 Mile Drive Proposal Session

After the proposal, Tucker and Caitlin planned to celebrate the best way they know how,  just the two of them. Tucker had not picked the restaurant yet, but with these two being self declared foodies, we have a feeling it will involve something delicious, candlelit, and completely worth lingering over. Bonus points if there is champagne for the celebration and a margarita somewhere in the mix, because they are big tequila people and we love a couple who knows their priorities.

They are staying at Pebble Beach Resorts, which makes the entire weekend feel like an effortless coastal escape. Whether they end up celebrating at The BenchStillwater Bar and Grill, or even a cozy spot in Carmel, the post proposal energy is always the same: a little giddy, a little surreal, and very much “wait… did that really just happen?”

The next day, the celebration gets even better. Tucker’s family arrives and they will be playing the local golf courses. Turning this proposal into the beginning of a full weekend of cheering, laughing, and telling the story over and over again. If you know Pebble Beach, you know golf weekends here are basically a tradition, and it feels especially fitting for this couple to start their engagement surrounded by ocean views and the people they love.

Planning Your Own 17 Mile Drive Proposal Photographer Experience

If you are planning a proposal in Pebble Beach, Carmel, or along coastline, here is what Tucker did right.

Newly engaged couple standing close for a kiss with soft coastal light

He chose a location that felt cinematic and personal. He planned for sunset so the lighting would be romantic and timeless. And he made sure she wouldn’t feel rushed. Which means they now have images that show not only the proposal, but the joy after the yes, when everything feels surreal and perfect.

That is our favorite part. The just engaged glow. The laughter. The way your hands keep reaching for each other like your body is reminding you that this is real.

Tucker and Caitlin, we are completely obsessed with you both. Thank you for trusting us to document this once in a lifetime moment. Your love is elegant, joyful, deeply genuine, and honestly just the kind of story we will never forget.
