Tips and Tricks: Photography Gear I Can’t Travel Without

AGS-Photo-whats-in-my-bag

When I travel, especially as a destination wedding photographer, I want to make sure I have exactly the travel photography gear I need and nothing extra. My two goals are to travel light and travel efficiently! This post covers the travel gear that I can’t travel without. I cover my favorite camera bag, the bare bones of what is in my camera bag, and what gear I use when I travel within the country…

In my bag, I have a roller bag that’s an airport camera bag that is TSA approved, fits under the seat, etc. I’ve been using it for seven to eight years now. Thinktank is the company and they replace parts on it for a lifetime. There are removable parts on the inside which is great! I really appreciate their products as a traveling photographer.

At minimum, I always carry two digital cameras, a film camera, 70-200mm, 24mm, and a 50mm. I split my film into two bags: unexposed and exposed. And I always label my flashes.

  • Minimum of two flashes
  • 1 battery charger
  • Extra cards
  • Light meter

At airports, they pull everything out of your bag and sometimes they don’t give everything back! It’s so important for me to be organized when I travel. I make sure that light stands go specifically in my checked-in luggage. I know what is in every single compartment so that I can double-check things quickly. It can get difficult – particularly when traveling alone!

One trick I have is to have a separate studio of equipment on the East Coast! That way, as an East Coast home-grown photographer, if I need to use strobe lighting, I have an entire set of strobe lighting already there that I don’t have to pack.

Thank you so much for reading about what my photography travel gear looks like. What are some of your favorites? I would love to know!
