Photographing Madison and Jonathan’s lifestyle shoot for their newborn was such a precious time. I visited their home in San Francisco and captured their sweet family within their own home. There’s something both sacred and raw about seeing a mother’s expression as she looks down at her newborn. It’s also so sweet to be able to step into someone’s home and capture a family within their own safe space.

How We Met

I met Madison and Jonathan through another sweet couple, Mike and Kristen (see their wedding here!). I was at Stanford photographing one day in November when they reached out to me. They recently had their first sweet baby, saw Mike and Kristen’s photos, and mentioned that they live in the Bay Area (where I travel often)!

We wanted to make sure that we captured the essence of their family so we chose a couple different locations within the home to communicate their space. The nursery was a given since it was decorated with all of their baby’s things! We also used a beautiful blank wall to create a minimalist feel. And then lastly, I chose to photograph them in their kitchen as well.

Capturing Motherhood

Besides the primary portraits of new parents with their baby, I also love integrating action shots into these sessions. I photographed Madison and Jonathan as they changed their baby’s diaper. It was important to me to capture Delaney stretching as she awoke from a sweet nap. The fingers and the toes were important (they don’t stay that little for long!). I just wanted to capture all of the things that they will miss most about this stage in life, especially since I got the honor to be in their home.
